Cataract surgery is not painful anywhere on the body, mainly due to the use of anesthesia and modern techniques. At times, the surgeon may instill eye drops that may cause anesthesia in the eye or might just inject a local anesthetic. Depending on the tissue pressure changes, some patients may feel pressure build-up or mild motion, but there is no pain.

Some patients experience mild pain, itching sensation, or feel sand like substance in their eye after the surgery, but this is well controlled using prescribed eye drops. The vast majority of patients have stated that any pain they may feel dissipates within a few days, and overall healing is attained in 1–2 weeks.

However, if you experience severe pain while undergoing the surgery or a few hours after the surgery, you are supposed to tell your doctor because this is a rare sign of complication.

Last year I underwent cataract surgery. I was amazed to witness the futuristic equipment that science has produced in this area of surgery.
During the brief treatment/surgery I felt absolutely no pain.
I did notice that after the surgery I was more sensitive to light.
I'm glad I had the operation, and I still marvel at what they did and the equipment they used without any pain.
